Your Session

We want to achieve the very best result for you so it really helps if you think about what kind of portrait you're looking for and where you'll be hanging your finished photos in your home. We can then advise on:
  • Location
  • The best time of day
  • Styling and what to wear
  • Any props that might be needed or special considerations

How long will it take?

Usually up to an hour is plenty of time for portraits.  If you are looking for something very artistic the shoot will be planned with you ahead of time.

What to wear?

I'm nearly always asked this question so here's some helpful advice for your portraits to look as timeless as possible.

  • Wear clothing without logos, loud stripes or patterns
  • Avoid sleeveless tops for adults as arms can tend to be overemphasised
  • Stay away from loose flowing tops (which can billow in the breeze) or tops which are too tight, to avoid emphasis on the tummy
  • Short dresses are best avoided on windy days or in seated shots
  • Think about the location and wear clothes that fit in with this style.  For example if the location is in a park or paddock, natural tones look good.  Urban setting can take a bit more funky approach but be careful of bright colours fighting with each other.

Colour Portraits

  • Any blues, denim, soft greens or autumn tones.  Denim looks great on girls with soft pinks or soft blues.  Soft blues can also be great on boys
  • In autumn or winter, hats, scarves, tailored coats and boots can look great
  • A splash of colour such as a scarf that matches a bright top often works well with denim and neutrals

Black & Whites

Picture

  • For lighter tones in your black & white images wear subtle pastel colours
  • For deeper tones and a more contrasty look wear strong colours
  • For black & white portraits of families, combinations of white tops, any tone of blue, taupe or grey generally works well.  It is important to mix white tops with other tones as they can look very stark in a black and white image if only one person wears a white top.  It is better to have at least two in white and two in other tones for balance.
  • White is fine for an individual portrait
  • If you're unsure whether you want all black and white or some images in colour, wear lighter tones
